Some vision disorders can decrease the patient’s field of vision. Patients may not be able to see items to the right or left of central vision which can cause a very dangerous situation when driving or walking. If loss of peripheral vision is suspected, a visual field test may be conducted. This test measures the eye’s ability to detect a spot of light as it enters into the line of vision. The patient looks into a screen and presses a button as soon as they detect the light ray. Decreased field of vision can be caused by many different eye problems including glaucoma, droopy eyelids and sometimes cataracts or retina disorders.
