Treatment Options

Today’s cataract surgery techniques are relatively simple compared to many years ago. Now, tiny operating instruments are used to make a 3 mm cut into the side of your cornea (the clear part of your eye in front of the iris.) A phacoemulsifier breaks up the cataract and suctions it out like a mini vacuum cleaner. If the surgery ended there, patients would need thick cataract glasses to compensate for the lens. Today’s technology however provides a variety of intraocular lenses that make vision following surgery better than it ever was before surgery. These lenses will last for the rest of your life. Cataracts do not grow back, so you will only need lenses inserted one time. There are times when a few cells remain in the eye after surgery. In those cases, a YAG laser is used following surgery to remove those few cells and maximize clear vision.
